The Watts Gallery - Artists’ Village is a unique Arts and Crafts gem in the village of Compton, near Guildford. The village is the legacy of Federick Watts and his wife Mary and was first opened to the public in 1904. It consists of galleries, a chapel, the artists’ home, Limnerslease, alongside well kept gardens and woodlands. The visit includes time to look at the permanent collection which includes paintings, sculpture and pottery as well as two guided tours, one of

the Watts Gallery and the other of the Watts Chapel. There will also be the opportunity to view the current exhibitions, Victorian Virtual Reality: Photographs from the Brian May Archive of Stereoscopy and Formations: Fiona Millais and Lucy Lutyens, an exhibition of paintings and sculptures.

Cranach at Compton Verney: Spotlight on the Northern European Collection

 Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) was one of the most successful and versatile artists of the Northern Renaissance. Our critically-acclaimed exhibition Cranach: Artist & Innovator (March 2020 – Jan 2021) put Compton Verney’s four paintings by Cranach in the spotlight and considered his continued relevance to artist’s working today. Join exhibition curator Amy Orrock to hear more about Cranach’s art, and other treasures from our Northern European collection.

 A Passion for Collecting: Folk Art at Compton Verney

Compton Verney’s Folk Art collection is hugely enjoyed for its accessibility and variety: outsize trade signs, weathervanes, wool pictures, furniture and paintings of misshapen animals. But how was the collection formed, who were the characters behind this, and what were their motivations?  Join Annelise Hone to discover how 20th century Hungarian émigré art dealer Andras Kalman became captivated by these unpretentious paintings and objects, built up an unrivalled collection, and helped to ensure that Folk Art is no longer regarded as  ‘the endangered species of the English Art World’.

The V&A is the world’s leading museum of art and design, housing a permanent collection of over 2.3 million objects that span over 5,000 years of human creativity. Our visit, led by Stephen Richardson, will focus on the British Galleries and will cover the period from around the Restoration in 1660, through to the end of the Victorian era, around 1900. There will also be time for you explore other areas of the gallery and if you wish, visit a special exhibition. See V&A website for further details. The V&A has three cafes offering a choice of food. If you wish to bring a packed lunch, you may use one of the outside areas or an indoor lunch room provided for schools and groups.

V and A Visit

Hampton Court is famous for being one of the palaces lived in by Henry VIII. It was built in 1515 and enlarged by Henry from 1529. The following century, William III undertook massive rebuilding and expansion work with a view to rival Versailles.

Among the many highlights are Henry VIII’s Great Hall hung with the splendid tapestries, The Story of Abraham and William III’s state apartments which include the Great Bedchamber. It also houses the Cumberland Art Gallery with masterpieces by Rembrandt, Holbein and Van Dyck, as well as the Mantegna Gallery, which contains The Triumphs of Caesar.

The Palace is surrounded by beautiful gardens where you can see, amongst other features, the restored Privy Garden and world famous Maze.

Standen House was built in the 1890s for wealthy London solicitor James Beale. It was designed by the architect Philip Webb and the interior of the house retains many of the original wallpapers and textiles designed by Webb’s friend William Morris. It also contains important contents by Morris’s Arts and Crafts Movement contemporaries including William De Morgan and W.A.S Benson.

The 12-acre garden has magnificent views over the Sussex Weald.
